5-Class Series :  Skinner Release Technique (SRT)

In this series of 5 classes we’ll get to play with connecting physicality and technical growth with our imagination. SRT is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned and professional dancers, actors, musicians, artists of all kinds, and all people interested in moving with ease.

Whilst these classes can be taken individually preference will be given to those who engage in the full series. Click here for more info on SRT.

2-Workshop Series :  Embodied Anatomy and the Dancing Body

These classes continue from Wendy and Martin’s years of research on how embodied anatomy builds a dancing body. They will be investigating the deep physical logic embedded in the anatomical structures that support playing with weight, volume and buoyancy.

Workshop Details

Dates / Times
Workshop 1: Wed 30 March, 9am – 12noon
Workshop 2: Wed 13 April, 9am – 12noon
Each workshop can be taken individually; however, we recommend taking both, as each session will build on the other.

Venue
Dancehouse – 150 Princes Street, Carlton VIC

Teacher Bios. Wendy and Martin both have a background in contemporary dance and spent significant time in the USA training in their particular areas of interest. Wendy becoming Australia’s only qualified Skinner Releasing Technique® teacher and Martin developing a deep understanding and experience of Contact Improvisation; both having worked with the founders of their respective techniques. They met soon after returning to Australia in the early 90s and joined with others to form State of Flux Dance Company through which they taught, researched, and performed for 11 years. Both taught in the dance department of the Victorian College of the Arts for over two decades.

Special Thanks to Omeo Dance Studio for their residency support of this project.

‘Undertaking Embodied Anatomy with Wendy is a thoughtful, intelligent and inclusive experience. She brings her girth of knowledge and love for movement to the studio, fusing the two in a manner that invites all kinds of bodies access to their own experience of embodiment and feltness. The learning supports and encourages curiosity via time taken to feel-into the body.  Embodied anatomy is medicine for these difficult times, reminding us of the enduring reality and necessity of being-with our bodies’.

5-Class Series :  Embodied Anatomy

In this second series of 5 classes for 2021, we’ll continue our exploration into the embodiment of fundamental relationships that support us in our ongoing play with gravity. We’ll deepen our understanding of the anatomy and introduce some important muscle slings that contribute to our Tensegrity balance. As in the last series, we’ll play with this information through the lens of Skinner Releasing technique. These classes are best experienced as a series but can also be taken individually.

This work is relevant and open to all levels of experience. You just need to bring a willingness to explore. It will be particularly valuable for those returning to the studio.

Our explorations will touch on:

  • Balancing and integrating the 3 spheres – of the skull, ribs and pelvis – into the spine.
  • Our ribs integrating into our lengthening spine and our shoulder muscle slings integrating into our ribs.
  • Core stabilization as a co-ordination pattern.  What the hell is it!!!!
  • Our diaphragms give us buoyancy and depth. They support our length and give us internal space.
  • Jaws, hips and the kinetic chain of the leg. The freedom to glide, jump and slide.

5-Class Series : Embodied Anatomy and Skinner Releasing Technique

In this series of 5 classes we’ll dive into the anatomy and relationships between various body parts that help us to experience greater stability and suspension into gravity. In these sessions we’ll get to explore some of the fundamental anatomy and play with these relationships through the imagery and principles derived from Skinner Releasing Technique. We’ll spend time delving into movement explorations of this rich imagery. These classes are best experienced as a series but can also be taken individually.

This work is relevant and open to all levels of experience. You just need to bring a willingness to explore.
It will be particularly valuable for those returning to the studio, after a long year of lock downs.

NB. Participant numbers are strictly limited. It will be an intimate class experience.
Accessibility: There are stairs to access the studio space.

The classes will look at the following areas, and the information and re-patterning will build with each class:

  • The body as a dynamic state
In this class we’ll look at the dynamic state created by the tensegrity structure of the body. Through understanding the nature of Tensegrity in the body we’ll explore multidirectional orientation into gravity and space and freedom for spinal movement.
  • Finding skull balance at the top of the spine & introduction to our adaptable feet
We’ll discover how the skull can float off the top of the spine whilst also becoming aware of the dynamic quality of the feet to absorb forces and manage weight.
  • Freeing your shoulders
Shoulders are a part of the spiral line. In this session we’ll spend time finding how the shoulders rest into the back plane of the body, and communicate with the ribs and spine in spiraling. This class will help us to integrate the arms into the core body, keeping the neck and skull free.
  • Pelvis as the connection between the spine and the legs.
The pelvis is the hub connecting the legs to the spine and is also partnered with the balance we establish of the skull on the spine. We’ll consider pelvic bone movement in relation to how we integrate the legs into the spine as we change levels in space.
  • Integrating through the spine and spiraling through its spaces.
The spine is dynamic due to its Tensegrity structure. We’ll spend some time understanding how the structure of the spine supports its integrating qualities through spiral patterning.
